Rijeka Crnojevića Montenegro
The Crnojević River forms a dramatic S‑shaped bend near the village of Rijeka Crnojevića

A sleepy riverside village on a dramatic river bend, Rijeka Crnojevića offers a taste of old Montenegro on the edge of Skadar Lake.

R ijeka Crnojevića is one of those places where time seems to slow down. Tucked away at the foot of green hills where the Crnojević River snakes its way towards Skadar Lake, this tiny village was once the seat of a Montenegrin ruler and a bustling trading port. Today it is better known for its postcard‑perfect river bend – an S‑shaped curve flanked by reeds and forests that has become one of the most recognisable landscapes in the country. Arriving here, you’re greeted by old stone bridges, tiled roofs and the gentle pace of life on the water.

We found that the best way to experience Rijeka Crnojevića is from two perspectives: at river level and from above. Down by the quay, small boats and kayaks set out on tours through lily‑covered channels and secluded coves rich with birds and fish. You can join a guided cruise or hire a canoe to explore at your own pace. A handful of waterside restaurants serve smoked carp, eel stew and local cheese, paired with wines from nearby cellars. In the village itself, the remains of ancient printing presses and a few atmospheric guesthouses hint at its historic importance.

The panoramic viewpoint above the river – accessible by a short drive or steep hike – reveals the famous bend in all its glory. From here you can see how the river winds through velvet‑green hills before vanishing into the wetlands. Photographers flock at sunset when the light turns the scene into a Monet painting. Yet even in the middle of the day, the view stuns. For many travellers, Rijeka Crnojevića offers a tranquil base for exploring the wider Skadar Lake Region, including monasteries on islets, farm stays and fishing villages. But even if you stop only briefly, the memory of this emerald river will linger.

Rijeka Crnojevića is proof that sometimes the smallest places hold the biggest views – and the richest stories.
