Perched on a mountainside at 1,270 metres, Artenara is Gran Canaria’s highest village – a place where houses are carved into the cliffs and almond trees bloom against a backdrop of rugged peaks.

If you’re seeking a village with both altitude and attitude, head to Artenara. Many of its homes and chapels are carved directly into the rock, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture that has sustained locals for centuries. The Virgen de la Cuevita church, for instance, is hollowed out of a cave and holds a much‑loved image of the Virgin Mary.

Above the village, viewpoints such as Mirador de Unamuno and Mirador del Cristo reveal sweeping views over the volcanic caldera of Tejeda, with landmarks like Roque Nublo and Roque Bentayga punctuating the horizon. Artesanal bakeries sell almond pastries and honey, while the surrounding trails invite hikers to explore one of the island’s largest protected natural areas. Visit in February to see the famous almond blossom festival, when the landscape turns white and pink.

Artenara is proof that even the highest, most remote villages on Gran Canaria are full of life, legend and spectacular scenery.
