Playa del Ingles beach in Gran Canaria with sunbathers, ocean waves and the Maspalomas dunes stretching along the coastline

Playa del Inglés is a sweeping stretch of golden sand where ocean and dunes meet, inviting sunseekers and wanderers alike.

On the south coast of Gran Canaria, Playa del Inglés unfurls in a broad, three-kilometre arc between the Maspalomas dunes and the Atlantic. Its soft golden sand and calm, shallow water make it one of the island’s most famous resort beaches. Families set up under straw umbrellas while children paddle in the gentle surf, and volleyball nets and paddle-board rentals hint at the more active side of beach life.

We’ve spent long afternoons here watching the light change on the sea. In the morning, runners trace the shoreline before the heat sets in; by midday the promenade hums with chatter as cafes and ice-cream kiosks open their shutters. Everything feels easy and accessible – showers, lifeguards and boardwalks keep things comfortable, and there’s always a quiet spot if you wander a little way from the busiest sections.

Towards the Maspalomas lighthouse the atmosphere shifts. The beach becomes wilder, with a section popular with surfers and kiteboarders when the wind picks up, and another where sunbathers relax free of inhibition. The dunes rise up nearby, creating a rippling backdrop that makes you feel as if the Sahara itself has crept to the ocean’s edge. Walk far enough along the sand and you’ll reach a point where all you can hear is the wind and the waves.

Yet Playa del Inglés is more than just a pretty beach. It’s a place where you can spend the morning body-surfing and the afternoon sipping a cortado on a terrace, where sunset brings a golden glow to the dunes and evenings are filled with the scent of sea salt and sun lotion. No matter how many times we return, there’s always something new about the light, the tide or the people that makes the experience feel fresh.

This is a beach for everyone – a ribbon of sand where you can let the day unfold at its own pace, from lazy swims to dune-top strolls and lively games of beach football.
