Playa de Amadores is a tranquil, man‑made bay with calm waters and soft sand that make it a family favourite and sunset lover’s dream.
The name Amadores means “lovers”, and it’s hard not to fall for this sheltered bay just west of Puerto Rico. Built between two curved breakwaters, the beach resembles a lagoon: crystal-clear water laps gently at imported golden sand, and the noise of the outside world seems to fade away. The beach holds Blue Flag status, and there’s an unspoken agreement that loud music and ball games stay elsewhere.
What strikes you first is the tranquillity. The breakwaters keep the waves small, making the bay ideal for families and anyone who wants to float peacefully in the ocean. Sunbeds and umbrellas line the sand in neat rows, while a wide boardwalk behind the beach connects to Puerto Rico and offers views back across the bay. Parents can relax knowing there are lifeguards on duty, clean toilets and showers just steps away, and plenty of cafés for ice-cream and cold drinks.
Behind the beach, a low promenade is dotted with restaurants and bars where the pace of life matches the gentle swell. Menu boards tempt you with fresh fish, tapas and chilled sangría, and long lunches often stretch into evening as the setting sun paints the cliffs orange and pink. Couples linger over cocktails, friends share plates of papas arrugadas, and children race each other along the water’s edge.
Despite its popularity, Playa de Amadores retains a certain intimacy. Perhaps it’s the way the bay hugs you in, or the fact that there’s always a quiet corner to be found at the far end. Wander along the coastal path, watch the ferries glide into Puerto Rico’s harbour, and let yourself slow down to the rhythm of the tide. There’s no better place on Gran Canaria to end a day with bare feet in the sand and the sun melting into the horizon.
Calm seas, soft sand and a front-row seat to some of the island’s best sunsets make Playa de Amadores feel like a purpose-built paradise.
