On Gran Canaria’s rugged northwest coast, Agaete is a coastal town where dramatic cliffs meet fertile valleys. The landmark El Dedo de Dios (‘Finger of God’) and the port of Puerto de las Nieves give Agaete a unique mix of natural beauty and seaside culture.
T he municipality of Agaete stretches from the green valley of the same name down to a rocky coastline pounded by the Atlantic. The small town of Puerto de las Nieves serves as its maritime heart – a white‑washed fishing village where ferry boats depart for Tenerife, cafés serve plates of grilled fish and the El Dedo de Dios rock needle stands sentinel in the sea. The original finger was partly destroyed by a storm in 2005, but the cliff‑lined bay remains a dramatic sight.
Inland, the Valle de Agaete climbs through terraced orchards of tropical fruits, coffee plants and vines. The valley is home to Finca La Laja, one of Europe’s few coffee plantations, where you can taste locally grown coffee and wine. Hikers will love the trail to the natural pools of Los Berrazales and the views from the mountain hamlet of El Sao. Everywhere you go, dramatic cliffs and deep gorges remind you that this is one of the wildest corners of Gran Canaria.
Back by the sea, visitors cool off in natural rock pools carved out by the waves and sample sweet almond pastries in town bakeries. Agaete offers a mix of authentic island life and awe‑inspiring landscapes that deserve a spot on any Gran Canaria itinerary.
Agaete is where fertile valleys meet volcanic cliffs, where you can swim in rock pools one moment and sip locally grown coffee the next – a true northwest escape.
