Roque Nublo

Roque Nublo
The imposing volcanic monolith of Roque Nublo under clear sky

Roque Nublo is the towering symbol of Gran Canaria. This ancient volcanic plug rises 80 metres above its base and stands like a sentinel in the centre of the island, offering panoramic views and a connection to the island’s volcanic past.

R oque Nublo has been a sacred site since the times of the indigenous Canarii. A short but steep hike through fragrant pine forest brings you to a plateau where the 67‑metre‑tall rock thrusts up into the sky. Standing here, with the clouds often below you and the peaks of Tejeda and even Tenerife’s Mount Teide visible on the horizon, it’s easy to understand why ancient islanders worshipped this place.

The trail to Roque Nublo begins at La Goleta and takes about 30 minutes each way. Along the way you’ll pass another notable rock, Roque de la Rana, and see hardy vegetation clinging to the volcanic soil. The summit plateau is rugged and windswept, and the views stretch across Gran Canaria’s calderas and ravines to the blue Atlantic beyond. Photographers love sunrise and sunset here, when the light turns the rock an intense orange.

After your hike, explore the nearby village of La Culata or stop in Tejeda for almond pastries and local cheese. Whether you climb for the challenge, the scenery or the spiritual connection, Roque Nublo is a must‑see that embodies the wild heart of the island.

At Roque Nublo you feel as though you’re standing on the roof of Gran Canaria, with all of the island’s mountains, ravines and coasts spread out below you.
