Teror is a pilgrimage town in the heart of Gran Canaria. Known for its Basilica of Our Lady of the Pine and colourful wooden balconies, this mountain village has a deep sense of tradition and faith.

T eror’s story begins with a miracle. In 1481, locals reported seeing a vision of the Virgin Mary near a pine tree, prompting the construction of the Basilica of Nuestra Señora del Pino. Today the basilica remains the town’s focal point, drawing pilgrims from across the Canary Islands, especially on 8 September when thousands come to honour the island’s patron saint.

Beyond its religious importance, Teror charms visitors with streets of 18th‑century houses, each one sporting brightly coloured facades and carved wooden balconies. Calle Real de la Plaza is the most photogenic of these, lined with small shops selling almond biscuits, chorizo de Teror and hand‑embroidered linens. On Sundays the town hosts one of the island’s best markets, where you can sample local cheeses, fruits and sweets while listening to Canarian folk music.

Teror’s central location makes it a great base for exploring the lush Northern Mountains. Nearby hikes lead through pine forests to viewpoints over the coast, and the neighbouring villages of Artenara and Firgas offer further glimpses into rural island life. Whether you visit for a day or linger longer, Teror invites you to slow down and savour the heritage of Gran Canaria.

In Teror, faith, tradition and mountain tranquillity weave together – balconies overflow with flowers, pilgrims mingle with locals, and the scent of pine drifts on the breeze.
